Come Learn more about the Exciting Future of Charisma Brands

Hello Marie Doll Friends!

Recently, John and I at Count Your Beans were offered a very special opportunity, like none we had ever experienced before.   We received a special invitation from Marie Osmond & Brian Blosil and the Charisma Brands team to attend a gala celebration in Disneyland during the weekend of July 23rd - July 25th, 2004.

Our collector friends are like family to us and we wanted to share this rich experience with you as well.  We had such an awesome time and so many questions from friendly collectors that we decided to create this web section to tell you all about our trip and share with you lots of exciting news about Charisma Brands and upcoming Marie Osmond dolls and promotions.  Of course we had hoped to have this section up last week but it's been extra busy here in Count Your Beans Land. We appreciate your patience in waiting for this page to begin to come to fruition and hopefully upon completion, you will find it is worth the wait.

For those of you who may have surfed into this page without knowing us, we are John and Karen Krejcha from Count Your Beans.  Count Your Beans is a family-owned Dolls, Bears, Collectibles & Giftware business based in San Jose, California and founded in 1998. We have a strong base of internet customers from around the world and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to work with people we would not have had the chance to meet had it not been for our website and our countyourbeans business at eBay.  (If you're wondering why we chose the name "Count Your Beans", you can learn a little more about the history behind our name here)  We pride ourselves on friendly, customer-oriented service and do our best to treat each collector with respect and a positive attitude.

We first started selling Marie's dolls in the year 2000 when they were being manufactured and distributed through Knickerbocker.  Then Marie & Brian acquired the company and named it Marian, LLC (a combination of both Marie and Brian's names).  Then in February of 2004, the company was renamed to Charisma Brands.

So under the invitation of Charisma Brands, John and I had the opportunity to leave our 4 1/2 year old son, Justin with Grandma and Grandpa and take off for a whirlwind weekend adventure that we will be sharing with you below.

Pictures of Starry Starry Night and Marie Osmond introducing Daisy from Babies A Bloom

Friday, July 23rd

Although we've taken a variety of family getaways, the trip to meet with Marie Osmond and Charisma Brands at Disneyland was to be the first full weekend we had ever spent away from our son.  As such, John and I were excited but a bit apprehensive.  We're sure other Moms & Dads can relate!  But we needn't have worried as Justin was in good hands and looking forward to his long weekend break from Mom & Dad and his daily work as Director of Toy Inspection at Count Your Beans.  (I suppose it didn't hurt that his Gram is a WAY better cook than I am and Grandpa had already planned a trip to the park!)

On the morning of our flight, we woke up excited and raring to go!  (Well, maybe a little sleepy but still jazzed!) John and I are definitely NIGHT OWLS and if you've done business with us for awhile, you've probably received emails from us at 2:00, 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.  As such, an 8:30 wake-up call was not exactly a dream come true but we did have a great weekend to look forward to and we were even able to sneak in a couple hits on the snooze button before leaving our home for the airport.

Our flight from San Jose to Orange County was on a commuter plane. I don't know if you've flown many commuter flights but those planes are SMALL.   John and I are both 5'10" and we felt like giants on the set of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids".  It gave us a fun chance to get cozy though and that is definitely a good thing! It was a smooth flight and relatively uneventful. The flying time was about 75 minutes, which was definitely better than a 6 hour drive.   If you know the Silicon Valley where we live (San Francisco Bay Area of California), rush hour traffic 30 miles away can easily take an hour or more so letting someone else do the navigating on our journey was a welcome break.

Corrie Hicks in Sales at Charisma Brands, LLC was at the airport to pick us up when we arrived.  She looked very pretty in her black floral dress. Unfortunately she had a little wait because our flight was a bit late.  She was very gracious though and this also gave us the chance to meet and ride to the hotel with Stacy and Brian from Once Upon A Time Collectibles in Mississippi.  Stacy and Brian were very nice and as we rode from the airport to the hotel, it turned out this was Stacy's first trip to California, so she and Brian were going to turn the weekend into a week adventure.

When we arrived at the Hyatt Regency in Garden Grove, CA, we were very impressed.  About a mile from Downtown Disneyland, this is a very nice hotel with a California Grill, Pizza Hut Express, Starbucks, Gift Shop, two pools & jacuzzis, meeting rooms and a weight room.  Corrie helped us and Stacy & Brian get set up with our rooms and then we took off for free time as each of us was staying in a different part of the hotel.

John and I had a room on the 14th floor at the very end of the hall and it was spacious and private.  One nice thing about the room was that when you opened the curtains, the windows gave you a view of the inside of the hotel and you could look down into the lobby.  Of course as we learned later that night, this might also lead to unexpected visitors peeking in, so if you weren't an exhibitionist, keeping the curtain closed at night was a suggestion.

About 5 minutes after we arrived into our room, we received a phone call from Tracy Stobaugh who is Director of Sales at Charisma Brands and our personal Sales Account Executive.  She is a real sweetheart and wanted to make sure we arrived safely and were happy with the accommodations.  About 10 minutes after that there was a knock on the door with a big surprise for us from Marie Osmond and Charisma Brands.  We were delivered a Marie Osmond Disneyland Canoe Pin Trader doll as well as a fun bag of snacks, (M & Ms - YUM, a favorite of Marie's and ours too), souvenirs and goodies for the weekend, including a camera, some pins, water bottles with Marie's image on the label and a handwritten welcome notecard signed by Marie.   The gifts and note were very touching and really helped set the mood for a fun-filled weekend.  We of course had to immediately call Tracy back and say thanks!

Our next stop was a trip to the gift shop.  In addition to checking for postcards, souvenirs and to see if they had any interesting dolls on display, John needed to purchase socks.  Really, what would an adventure be if you didn't forget something when packing?  (At least he had plenty of boxers!)

The rest of the day we had free time so John and I grabbed a bite to eat down at the California Grill, visited the pool and health club and looked around to see if we recognized any of the other retailers from their website pictures.   Prior to this event, we had never had the pleasure of meeting any of our colleagues in person, although we had shared emails and phone calls with a few such as Diane at Diane's Dolls, Maria at Savings Graces and Tricia at Tricia's Dolls, Bears & Gifts.  Probably our longest relationship though was with Mary & Stacy from Art & Home DuJour.  Prior to Mary & Stacy selling Marie Osmond dolls through their Art Gallery, Mary was actually a very good Marie Osmond dolls customer of Count Your Beans and she had worked with John and me for quite some time, John primarily.  (I know I'm going off on a tangent here but as those of you who purchase from our website know, John tends to work more with our website & layaway customers and I tend to work more with our eBay and auction customers.  Truth be known though, we both work in some fashion with everyone whether it be emails, receipts, packing, phone calls or customer service and you all mean a lot to us!  Without our collecting friends, we would not have the opportunities that we do and we are very grateful!!! --- Tangent over...but I just had to say that!)

As we knew the next couple days were going to be busy and we were going to have to get up early, we decided to retire to our room to kick back for a little bit and relax for the night.  At about midnight, John had the munchies and had to sample the Pizza Hut Express. Chocolate lover that I am (and yes, I am signed up for Marie Osmond's Hershey's Kisses doll),  I sampled the M & M's from the Charisma Brands treat bag and they were MMM....MMM... good!

Saturday, July 24th - BIG EVENT DAY

As mentioned earlier, John and I are late night owls but we thought with so much to do on this big day, we'd try and get an early start and hit the complimentary continental breakfast provided for us by the hotel.  Have you ever had the best of intentions to get up early but your body just said "10 more minutes" and that "10 more minutes" turned into a half hour? Or even an hour? If so, we can relate!

Although we missed breakfast, we did have lunch planned so we were right on schedule. Even though we may have a little challenge getting going in the morning, we are the kind of people who like to be at events early, so as to not miss anything and we did have an event planned before meeting with Charisma Brands that we were really looking forward to.

John had exchanged emails before our trip with a special lady named Rhonda from the Marie Doll Friends forum.  We had been invited to meet with her and many of the other lovely Osmond Doll Collectors in Disneyland for a fun lunch after Marie Osmond finished her doll signing in Disneyland.  I was really looking forward to this and John was too because we previously had not had much of a chance to meet many of our internet customers and doll collecting colleagues.  As so many of our Marie Osmond Doll Friends live around the world, having the chance to meet a bunch of great people after a doll signing sounded like fun!  We grabbed our camera, backpack, notebook, sunscreen and goodies, collected our Disneyland passes and took a ride on the free shuttle the hotel provided and headed to Disney.

Unfortunately, we left the hotel thinking the event was at one restaurant in Downtown Disney and it turned out to be at another in Disneyland park.  Having not been very familiar with Disneyland or Downtown Disney, we spent the lunch hour walking up and down restaurant row in Downtown Disney getting some good exercise.  Going into each restaurant, we immediately asked the host or hostess if they saw a group of animated patrons with plenty of pink boxes!  I must say that we received many interesting looks and to John's dismay, he realized that with each mistaken attempt, he was getting deeper and deeper into the Krejcha family doghouse.  Although we ended up missing the event, we did email Rhonda later and she was quite understanding. As a side note, Rhonda was the $1,000 winner of Marie Osmond dolls in a previous Marie Osmond Dolls Sweepstakes!   CONGRATULATIONS RHONDA!!

As for us, we decided to grab a bite of pizza at the Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria in Downtown Disney. It was very delicious and the gooey cheese really hit the spot!  By the time we were finished, it was time to head over to Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, where the Charisma Brands event was to take place.  Now we're getting to the good stuff!

Marie Osmond / Charisma Brands, LLC Saturday Event at Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney

Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen is also a restaurant located in Downtown Disney.  If you like New Orleans Cajun style cooking, this is their specialty. The Marie Osmond / Charisma Brands event was located on the 2nd floor of the establishment in a separate meeting/dining room that they rent and cater to for private parties.  Because John and I were the first to arrive, we had a chance to sit upstairs for a bit, relax in the outside area and enjoy the view while the friendly staff at Charisma Brands made their finishing touches in the event room.

This also gave us the opportunity to greet and meet some of the staff early, including Pat Semler in Charisma Brands Customer Service who has been always super to work with. (Collectors who call in to C.B. directly may also have had the chance to chat with her too.  Pat is also the Mom to Corrie Hicks, Charisma Brands Territory Manager. Both have been at Charisma Brands / Marian, LLC / Knickerbocker for a number of years.)  We also had a talk with Tony Shutts, who is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Charisma Brands, LLC and a really bright and friendly guy.  Tony had been in Disneyland earlier in the day riding the rides with his kids and if I remember correctly, he had traveled around the park with Brian Blosil, Charisma Brands Chairman / CEO and some of the Blosil / Osmond kids as well.  Imagine the size of that entourage!

An advantage of being the first retailers to arrive is that we also had a chance to see the other retailers come in and snap a couple impromptu pictures (COMING SOON)  For retailers that weren't already in Disneyland earlier in the day, a shuttle was arranged so that they could ride to the event together.  Although it was quite a hot day, everyone was dressed nicely and looked great for the event.

People In Attendance

We were soon allowed to enter the meeting room and it looked fun and friendly.  There were six round tables set up for groups of 6 to  8 and there was a podium at the front with a microphone.  Marie and Charisma Brands had a special treat waiting for us at the tables in the form of personalized Mickey Mouse hats complete with ears. Peggy Vicioso who works with Marie Osmond and Annette Funicello Bears was also at the event and seeing the ears immediately reminded us of Annette.  It was a really fun touch and a great way to start the afternoon.   It also made it pretty easy to find our seats!

In addition to the hats, each place setting also had a Mickey Mouse Ears shaped Rice Krispies treat.  John is a HUGE Rice-Krispies treat aficionado so this was a big bonus.  John's 36th birthday is coming up on Friday, August 20th (Marie's QVC Show Day!) and he'll often get interesting shaped treats for his birthday and special holidays.  If you have any fun ideas or recipes for Rice-Krispies treats, please let me know. I'm not much of a gourmet but I'd like to try and make him something new!  (Just the thought of me cooking should send him into hysterics but I love my man and am always game for new things!)

We thought you might appreciate knowing who else was in attendance so I'll start at the front of the room and work backwards.  If I left anyone out, it was unintentional and if you happen to be reading this, I do apologize.   Please drop Karen at Count Your Beans a line to make an update.

Okay, so starting at Table 1 in the far front and to the left, the Charisma Brands Retailers at the table were Diane from Diane's Dolls and a guest and two ladies from The Doll Market (I'm sorry, I didn't catch the names).  Also at that table were Tracey Stobaugh, Director of Sales at Charisma Brands (& our awesome personal Sales Rep) as well as Michelle Hankins, Charisma Brands Territory Manager.

Table 2 in the far front and to the right included Marie Osmond and Brian Blosil, Chairman and CEO of Charisma Brands, LLC.  Other affiliated team members there were Lisa Hatch, doll sculptor and who also works directly for Marie Osmond and Peggy Vicioso who does Marketing for Charisma Brands and Annette Funicello Bears (we carry this line too) and is also a bear artist and the creator of the Cotton Trails bunny themed home decor line. Red Turner, who you might know as having done Costume / Wardrobing for Cher was a special guest at this table as well.  I believe he was also a partner at one time with Bob Mackie.

Table 3 included John and Karen Krejcha from Count Your Beans, your friendly hosts of this website and part-time roving weekend reporters!  Also at our table were Maria from Saving Graces and her sister, Melanie, Toni & Frank from Toni's Collectibles, and Tony Shutts, CFO/COO for Charisma Brands.

Table 4 included Corrie Hicks, Charisma Brands Territory Manager, Stacy & Brian from Once Upon A Time Collectibles, Dixie from The Doll Cellar and Allan & Sue from Lane's.

Table 5 included Jackie Parfitt, Charisma Brands Sales & Merchandising, Pat Semler, Charisma Brands Customer Service and I *think* Kim & Phil from Dolls & Darlings. (I know they were at the event but I am not positive whether they were at Table 5 or 6)

Table 6 included Mary & Stacy from Art & Home DuJour, Tricia & Richard from Tricia's Dolls, Bears & Gifts and I believe a couple others.

I believe there were a few other Charisma Brands employees in attendance who we may not have had the pleasure of meeting personally, so 20 lashes with a wet noodle to me and if I left you out, I'd be happy to add your name to the site if you'd like.  (email Karen here

Marie Osmond's entrance

After the retailers sat down, we had about 15 minutes or so to mingle and chat before the opening remarks.  This was a nice opportunity because many of the retailers such as ourselves had never met the other retailers in the room.   Normally I suppose each of us would look at the other as competition but I'd like to think on this day that we were all there unified, looking as a cohesive unit to help Marie Osmond, Brian Blosil and the Charisma Brands A-Team build and enhance value to the Marie Osmond Brand name.

During this time and throughout much of the event, delicious appetizers and drinks were served to us from the friendly Jazz Kitchen staff.   Included among the delicacies were chicken skewers and coconut shrimp and various meats on a stick with plenty of cajun flavoring.  (Thank goodness there was also plenty of ICE WATER!)

Also during this getting-to-know-you time, John and I also had the opportunity to chat more with Tony Shutts and learned that he occasionally comes up to our area and wanted to potentially get together with us in the future. (Sounds great, Tony!) He has been with the entity now known as Charisma Brands for over 10 years, so he has seen a tremendous amount of change. He started with the company when it was still L.L. Knickerbocker and involved in quite a few different kinds of business pursuits including Kenneth Jay Lane jewelry.

When Count Your Beans first became authorized dealers for the company, we also sold quite a few Terri Lee Dolls (we still do) and Knickerbocker Teddy Bears (we still have a few of these too!). We found it interesting to learn that the Knickerbocker Toy Company that was run in Southern California had Knickerbocker involvement but it was purchased and run by a completely unrelated Knickerbocker family than the one who founded the Knickerbocker Toy Company around 1850 in Albany, New York.

Anyway, tangent aside, after a few minutes of chatting and getting to know each other, we heard a buzz in the back of the room and looked back to see Marie Osmond and her husband, Brian Blosil making their entrance along with Lisa Hatch and Peggy Vicioso.  This was the first time we had ever met Marie, so it was a real pleasure when she came over to our table and personally said hello to each of us. Marie looked young, vibrant and very beautiful.  The energy she conveys when you see her on TV or hear her on her new Talk Radio program, Marie & Friends comes even more alive when you hear her in person. Marie said that the signing at Disneyland earlier in the day had been great and she also highly advocated for everyone to go on her new favorite ride, Soarin' at the Disneyland California Adventure Park.

Prior to selling dolls, I was a professional women's bowler and spent a few years touring the USA competing on the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour. (What a change this is!)  In my travels, I had the opportunity to meet quite a few people who are used to being in the limelight and also see them when they are "off-stage" so to speak.  It is often night and day between public/private personas but I wanted to say and John agrees with me whole-heartedly, that Marie Osmond comes across as a genuine, caring, warm, spirited woman who isn't afraid to laugh or cry or be human.  I'm getting a bit ahead of myself but we could tell from when she spoke that she cares very much about her Marie Osmond Dolls line and the collectors who support it. This is very good news for you as a collector because Marie plans to be around creating beautiful dolls for quite awhile and Charisma Brands is only beginning to scratch the surface with exciting new marketing programs that will bring new collectors to the line and help you enhance the collectibililty and value of your collection.

Opening Remarks from Tony Shutts and Brian Blosil

Tony Shutts from Charisma Brands led the opening remarks with a warm introduction and an invitation to the retailers in attendance to help Charisma Brands improve the way they do business.

The 11 Retailers invited to the event were Charisma's Top 11 Retail Accounts for the prior 6 months and in most cases, probably the past year.  Initially there were supposed to be 12 retailers invited but one dealer couldn't be in attendance. (We don't know who this was.)  Then they decided to invite just the Top 10 but 10th and 11th place were so close to each other in sales volume, that they decided to invite both.  It was not said what retailer finished in what order as these figures are proprietary. We do know one place and that is that Count Your Beans doll friends and collecting customers are # 1 with us and we thank you for your support.  If it weren't for you, we would not have had this special opportunity, so thank you very much and THANK YOU again!

After Tony spoke, it was time for Brian Blosil to greet the group.  A self-proclaimed "jock", he joked that the management and sales of dolls (in pink boxes, nonetheless) was not what he had originally expected to be doing. (I think he may have had pro sports in mind!)  John and I both found this amusing since I have a professional bowling background and grew up as a tomboy loving sports. John is also quite an athlete and neither of us figured we'd be involved with dolls either but here we are and quite happy at that! Judging by the number of dolls in our personal collection that grace practically every room of our home, we have also become one of our own top customers! (It just goes to show that there can be a place in all hearts for the happiness that dolls bring!)

Recent History of Charisma Brands

Brian also spoke candidly to address some of the rumors that have been floating about the stability of Charisma Brands and the recent change in management. We have received quite a few questions from interested collectors and wanted to reconfirm for you that Brian Blosil is indeed back in Charisma Brands management as the current Chairman / CEO, a new change that took place recently. (Those with questions are probably referring to our Marie Osmond News Page archive and the February 2004 press release when Brian sold his interests in the company to Charisma Brands colleagues. As Brian and Marie wanted to take an active interest in the company again, another transition was made.)

Brian, Marie and Tony's intention is to get the word out to customers that Charisma Brands is here to stay and that their focus is now going to be the collectible dolls business.  For those who have asked what Marie's part in the company is, our understanding is that she has neither ownership nor direct management involvement with Charisma Brands, however she does have an exclusive license with Charisma Brands to promote the Marie Osmond Dolls Collection and indirectly, she is involved very heavily with the production, creation and promotion of her brand. (If this is incorrect, it is my misunderstanding and not that of the company's.)

In addition to producing and distributing the Marie Osmond Dolls line, Charisma Brands caters to other doll collectors as well.  They license and produce the Magic Attic Doll & Costumes line designed by Robert Tonner, Saddy Gladdy topsy turvy rag dolls by Lynn Huberman and Kewpie dolls (based on the illustrations of Rose O'Neill - Kesco). They were formerly named Marian, LLC (a combination of Marie and Brian's first name) but were officially renamed to Charisma Brands, LLC on February 12th, 2004. The Charisma name came from its Rhode Island manufacturing facility, the Charisma Manufacturing company. The Rhode Island facility was formed by European artisans some thirty years ago to create beautiful, high quality, hand-made products, a tradition that continues to this day. Since the spirit of artistic design and skillful craftsmanship established in Rhode Island applies to all of the Company’s products, it was natural to adopt this name for the entire Company.

Questions from the Retailers and industry-related commentary

After the introductory remarks from both Tony and Brian, Brian opened up the floor to see if any of the retailers had any comments or questions at this time.

Some of the issues that were brought up related to turnover and management involvement.  As Chairman, Brian admitted that there were some recent management changes but they now had a "mean and lean A-Team" ready to move forward. He was extremely confident in the A-team's capabilities to promote the Marie Osmond Brand.

Another key issue for collectors and retailers related to doll pricing and restoring doll equity and value. It is not a secret that over the past year, doll values for many top brand names have dropped considerably. Multiple liquidators that were not Marie Osmond authorized dealers played a part in the price dumping of "New Release" dolls and Charisma is actively involved in stopping this practice.   There is only so much though that they or any company can do because of price fixing laws and the many legalities that surround the situation.

This definitely is not a problem isolated to the Marie Osmond brand. Many competitive doll lines and retailers have gone out of business in the past couple of years because they could not compete and/or did not know how to market or restore equity in their brand. Having worked with a number of different doll manufacturers over the years, we have seen those that were not progressive or service-oriented really take a hit while their internet-savvy and internet-retailer friendly 21st century competitors passed them by.  There are still those purists (both manufacturers and retailers) to this day that don't understand the power of the internet and how it can propel their brand name forward. Fortunately, Charisma Brands has been open-minded in this arena for quite some time and in the future you will see even more exciting progression as they develop and expand a special Marie Osmond dolls website just for collectors

As an interesting bit of side trivia, the Top 11 retail accounts make up approximately 65% of Charisma's business.  Of these 11 retailers every single one without exception has an internet ecommerce website and many of the top retailers we spoke with have told us that 90% or more of their business comes from the internet.  Although naturally each brick and mortar store gladly welcomes and appreciates its walk-in customers, the convenience, accessibility and usefulness of being able to get information through a store's website attracts new customers that are not near a brick and mortar store and retains customers who don't always have the time to drop in and visit.

Regarding the doll industry and recent slumping of pricing, it fortunately does appear that the market is begin to turn upwards again. Charisma Brands believes that the doll industry did hit a recent bottom but they are strategizing now to take advantage of the upswing and you should begin to see those benefits. The last QVC show for Charisma Brands was their best in 4 years.  As retailers, we have seen a real pick-up in pre-orders and sales of the August - November dolls.  (We know the pictures that were provided early really help and Charisma plans to continue this trend for the future, hooray!!)

Brian wanted retailers and collectors to be assured that the #1 priority to the company will be in restoring equity to the brand and adding value to the brand for the future and the next generation of Marie Osmond doll collectors.  Perceived value and maintainable equity is of extreme importance to collectors and retailers alike.   Retailers were invited to submit their suggestions for consideration after the event and having spoken with a few people, I do know that we and others did email comments.

Collectors, you have a lot to look forward to as Charisma Brands is positioning themselves with many new marketing programs to retain your business and gain new collectors to the line. Keep sending in those suggestions and we'll keep passing them along! This will help increase the integrity of the brand, the value of the brand and the demand for the brand.

Per your feedback, smaller edition sizes are coming (i.e. PJ LE 500 - Breathtaking In Blue LE 600 - Starry Starry Night LE 750 - Adora Belle Halloween Kitty LE 750 - Vivian LE 750 - Christmas Cookie LE 1000 - Farmer's Daughter LE 1000 - Susie Rose Bouquet LE 1500 - Daisy Jane LE 1500 - We Wish You A Merry Christmas LE 1500 - You can pre-order these on our website through our Marie Osmond Alphabetical Pages)   Why this is good for you is that when a doll sells out quickly, it has a much higher likelihood of retaining its initial retail value and even escalating in value on the secondary market.  You also can take pride in knowing that you will have a special doll that others want and it will eventually if not immediately become hard to find.  Of course Marie does want to see her dolls in the hands of many different kinds of collectors so there will still be open editions on some dolls like the tiny tots and dolls with higher edition sizes as well.  Of the limited edition dolls coming out in August and October, the largest edition size we saw was 5,000.  Most dolls are between 500 - 3,000.

Comments from Lisa Hatch

After Brian spoke, Lisa Hatch was introduced.  Lisa is a master multi-tasker who works directly for Marie Osmond and not Charisma Brands.  That being said, she still has quite a bit of interaction and influence with Charisma and is of course the sculptor of many popular dolls such as the 3 M'Lissa Virginia Toddlers and the soon to be popular M'Lissa Virginia Tiny Tots trio coming later this month and beautiful Susie Rose Bouquet later this October.

Lisa is a very positive person and if you didn't know better, you might think that Lisa and Marie were sisters because they look and dress quite a bit alike!  Lisa expressed that her business focus for the immediate future is primarily on promoting and building the integrity of the Marie Osmond Brand name.  She also talked about how they had courted Peggy Vicioso from Annette Funicello Bears (& also the Cotton Trails Home Decor Line) to bring her on board to help with marketing.  She said that she and Peggy would be sharing news about the upcoming dolls the next day at the Charisma Brands morning retailer meeting.

It's Marie's turn to speak!  This is one busy woman!

Being the only girl in a family with nine children, Marie started collecting dolls at an early age.  It was a special tradition that she shared with her Mom and now shares with her own children as well.  Two and a half years ago, Marie's Mom, Olive became sick. Marie's priorities transitioned as she took time off her busy schedule to be with her Mom through her sickness.  Sadly, Marie's Mom passed away May 9th, 2004 on Mother's Day. Love outpoured to Marie and the Osmond family from throughout the world as can be seen in Marie Osmond's online guestbook.

Pertaining to the Charisma Brands Retailer Event, after Brian answered retailer questions and Lisa spoke, it was Marie's turn to take the floor.   All eyes and ears were open!  After welcoming everyone to the event and transitioning a bit from Brian & Lisa's comments, Marie spoke to us from her heart and talked about the things she was doing in her life and how important it was to her to help promote the quality and value of the Marie Osmond Dolls Brand.  She expressed her appreciation of the retailers in the room and indicated that the best was yet to come.

Marie told us that she is currently the only doll manufacturer still selling her dolls on QVC and that her last QVC Marie Osmond dolls show produced the best result they had seen in 4 years. (9/10 update - Show Stoppers and their Florence Maranuk Collection are now also on QVC in the USA but as of the time we wrote this, Marie was still the only seller there.)

Collectors do love Marie Osmond dolls and that has a lot to do with their affection towards Marie herself.  No other doll company out there has Marie! Although in theory, QVC is competition to doll retailers, they are also complementary because every time that Marie does a show on QVC, doll retailers such as Count Your Beans see a boost in business.   Collectors watching Marie on TV from home have an opportunity to listen to Marie talk about her dolls and to see many of the pieces up close.

Personal Note: ** Marie will have her next show on QVC on Friday, August 20th (John's birthday).  Since as retailers, we have less overhead than QVC does, we also have the opportunity to be competitive and offer special promotions like Free UPS Grd/Ins Shipping in the continental USA over $50 and our special website Count Your Beans Bonus Beans Customer Loyalty and Rewards Program.  We will be price-matching (meeting or beating) any special promotions that they offer during their show. **

After talking a bit about QVC, Marie spoke affectionately about her new syndicated radio show, Marie and Friends.  This is a clever, funny, quick-witted wholesome show aimed primarily at women but attracting listeners as well from around the country. Marie will also be launching a new show on Oxygen and Pax this Fall called "Here's To Your Health".

Currently Marie is on a major press tour which has included stops on Entertainment Tonight, CBS, The Today Show, The View, ABC, NBC, Fox, On-Air With Ryan Secrest, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Day Live and CNN.  If that wasn't enough she also had a big interview on Larry King Live in early August. (Transcript of the Larry King Live session is here in case you missed it.). As Marie's News / Radio Shows grow, her other businesses grow as well and more attention comes to the Marie Osmond Collectible Dolls line.

At this point in the event, it was time for Marie to debut her exciting new vinyl line of Babies A Bloom dolls that has been in production through Charisma Brands and Marian, LLC for the past 2 - 3 years.  This is a doll line for current collectors to collect and share with the next generation of collectors. Marie unveiled to us the first retail exclusive doll in the line.  Her name is Daisy!  Crafted in patented Cuddle Me Vinyl, Daisy is a collectible doll you'll love to play with and a play doll you'll love to collect!  These are super gifts for daughters and granddaughters.  (Personal note: Count Your Beans is also going to be offering lots of fun Daisy related accessories!)

Stay tuned for more details!  There is also going to be a Santa Bloomers Holiday Doll coming out in October 2004 as well!  Although we don't have a picture of Santa Bloomers, we hope to shortly.  The clothes for each doll will be interchangeable so Daisy (Retail Exclusive) and Santa Bloomers and Blossom (QVC's Babies A Bloom Exclusive) will all be able to share outfits.

Marie said there had been a great response to the Babies A Bloom line from focus groups.  The first dolls will retail for $99.00 but have Introductory Pricing of $89.00 and a special authorized $10 off COUPON Discount price of $79.00 if you contact Count Your Beans and ask for the coupon special!

Time to hand out Star Retailer Awards

After unveiling Daisy from Babies A Bloom, the room was buzzing with excitement so the next special event on the itinerary was to hand out special Top Retailer Star Awards to each of the top 11 retailers in attendance.  As each of us was called up alphabetically, Brian would share a little trivia about the store or ask a few questions.  Here are couple of the pictures that John and I had taken with Marie.

johnmariekaren2re.jpg (66275 bytes)

We love this picture with Marie! Doesn't she have a great smile?

Updated 8/18 with a VERY special thank you to HAYLEY for her photo-editing skills!

This one you'll see in thumbnail form throughout our site and in many of our eBay auctions

Wasn't it nice for Marie to coordinate her outfit with ours for the picture?

Starry Starry Night

As if the awards and the trip weren't enough of an unexpected treat, after each retailer had his/her picture taken, a very special Marie Osmond doll was introduced. In celebration of the Star Retailer awards and in order to add another exclusive and limited doll for her collectors, Marie wanted a gorgeous, colorful, special doll for her collecting friends.

Her name is Starry Starry Night and she is being sculpted by Sonja Bryer. She will be extremely special because she is being limited to just 750 pieces and Marie has promised to hand-sign each one of the certificate's of authenticityStarry Starry Night has reddish blonde hair and turquoise blue eyes and a gorgeous turquoise-blue dress with lots of star accents. She will be a must-have doll!  The pictures below are ONLY of the first prototype.  The final doll has promised to be full of frills and glitter and glamour.  There will also be a special ad showing the doll in an upcoming Dolls or Doll Reader magazine later this Fall!

Marie, John and Karen with Starry Starry Night - a special Retail Exclusive Doll Limited to just 750 pieces & 11 Retailers

In order to be fair to customers, each retailer will receive an allocation of a specific number of dolls.  The good news is that each retailer is GUARANTEED their allocation, so if you place the doll on reservation with us, and we confirm your pre-order, Charisma Brands has assured us we will get our allocation and you will get your doll (barring any changes / unforseen circumstances)!  We are very excited about this doll and choose her as one of our top picks for the Fall due to her beautiful jewel-tone colored dress and timeless appeal.  Due to an anticipated sell-out, we highly encourage pre-orders and will post a picture of the final doll as soon as it is available.

Dessert and Closing Remarks

After pictures were taken and the Starry Starry Night doll was shown, retailers were invited to grab a bite of dessert (plenty of chocolate, yum) and mingle for a few minutes.  Brian walked up to the front again and expressed his appreciation for Tracy Stobaugh, Director of Sales and each member of the Charisma Brands team who has stayed with Charisma through its recent roller coaster of ups and downs.   Brian expressed that he considered the business team as a family and that the family also included the retailers who had continually supported the Marie Osmond doll line.   It was noted that most of the August and Fall 2004 dolls would be available to be seen at the Hyatt Regency on Sunday and that he and Marie appreciated everyone's attendance at the event.

Time to Go and Hit some rides at Disneyland

After staying around a few minutes to mingle, Marie and Brian said their good-byes and left the event.  John and I checked our watches and seeing that it was about 5:30 p.m., we decided to head back to the hotel, change into shorts and take the shuttle back to Disneyland for a fun date night and souvenir shopping for our son, Justin.

Surprisingly, our timing with the hotel shuttles was right-on both coming and going and by 6:30 p.m. we had entered Disneyland ready for a night of adventure.  Being that it was a busy July night, we realized we wouldn't get a chance to do all the rides but there were definitely a few we would not miss!  John and I both agreed that we'd rather do MORE rides and LESS lines so as we passed a ride, if the line was short, we did it!  Some of the rides we ended up going on included the Jungle Cruise, the Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted House, the Monorail and the Matterhorn. We were both looking forward to Splash Mountain but with a 2 hour line, John and I came to the consensus that we could stand in the shower later that night and splash each other for a similar effect without out nearly as much stress and probably more fun!

Our son is TOTALLY into road signs so we picked up 3 special signs near Autotopia and grabbed a bite to eat at a hamburger place near the monorail.  After about 4 1/2 hours in the park, we remembered we had an EARLY (9:00 a.m.) morning meeting on Sunday and so we decided to head back to the shuttle bus and call it a night at the hotel. We were back in our room near midnight and stayed up probably another 90 minutes or so chatting animatedly about the day's events.  Ironically, we flipped the TV on and got to watch Donny Osmond hosting the Pyramid show so it was quite an amusing end to an Osmond-filled day.  We waved at our neighbor across the way who had peeked into our window the night before and bid him adieu and closed the curtains.  I then got a nice foot rub and massage out of the deal so all-in-all it was quite a fun day.

Sunday, July 25th - Retailer Meeting at the Hyatt

The Charisma Brands Retailer morning meeting was set for 9:00 a.m.  Our wake-up call was for 8:00 a.m.  (I should say our FIRST wake-up call because if I recall correctly, there was also one at 8:15, 8:30 and a "get the heck up" alarm clock blaring at 8:40 a.m.)  We were out the hotel door at 8:55 a.m. and were proud to be the 2nd or 3rd retailer into the meeting room at 9:00 a.m. on the button!  (Guess we weren't the only late night owls in the bunch!)

When we walked in the room, it looked like Dolly Central! On the left, on the right and in the front of the room were table after table of new Marie Osmond dolls, none of which we had seen in person, many of which we hadn't even known existed. John and I were each given a copy of the Fall 2004 catalog and told that the main supply for retailers would be shipping with our August dolls. (If you have pre-ordered an August doll with us, we will ship a free copy of the Fall 2004 Marie Osmond Dolls catalog with your order. If you have not pre-ordered a doll but are reading this and would like a free catalog anyway, please drop us a line at countyourbeans@aol.com and we will mail your catalog within the next few weeks when our main supply that we ordered arrives.  One free catalog per customer, please.)

New dolls that were announced to us on this day included the Retailer Exclusive Baby Adora Belle Holiday 2004 (misprinted in the Fall 2004 Catalog as Baby Adora Holly Belle - the QVC doll), Adora Belle Poodle (a JCPenney first exclusive that will be coming to retailers in November) and Beary Bitty Ballerina Adora Belle with a Marie Osmond doll and Annette Funicello Ballerina Bear (another JcPenney first exclusive coming to us in November).  We also got a first peek at the Adora Belle Halloween Kitty porcelain doll. She's a retailer exclusive limited to 750 pieces and is sure to be a sell-out based on her picture and current collector demand.  Other new dolls in the room included 3 more Ice Cream Kids to complement Cherry Vanilla. Their names are Mint Chip, Rainbow Sherbet and Rocky Road. Each is a limited edition of 1500 pieces and although there is no ETA yet, each is expected to come out sometime in 2005.  We have catalog pictures of each on our website and each is available for pre-order.

Originally we had been told before the event that we would be able to take pictures of all the dolls and share them online with our collecting friends.  Unfortunately, that decision changed as Charisma Brands thought it would be best if the first representations that collectors saw were their professional studio photos.  The good news as seen above is that we were allowed to share our pictures of Starry Starry Night and Daisy and also we were allowed to photograph Candi Corn (since they didn't yet have a photo).  Pictures for the Adora Belle Poodle and Beary Bitty Ballerina should be coming shortly.

The event started at about 9:15 a.m.after all the retailers had arrived.  Peggy Vicioso and Lisa Hatch shared a slide show style collage of Marie's history and career, including pictures from Marie's family album.   It was a neat way to start the meeting and re-emphasized what an incredible amount of life Marie has lived so far in her 44 years.

The primary topic for the meeting was the Babies A Bloom line of vinyl dolls, utilizing their trade patented "Cuddle Me Vinyl".  Other dolls in the future will have the Cuddle Me Vinyl but the Babies A Bloom line will be the first.   This is a line of dolls that are supposed to be collectibles and "play-ables" versus dustibles!  Daisy from Babies A Bloom was passed around the room and each of the retailers was invited to pick her up, run our hands through her hair and hug her.

Key points about this line include that the clothing is being designed by a well-known children's clothing designer.  The Winter dolls will have a thicker winter fleece and the Spring / Summer dolls will have a polar fleece with lace.  The line is very tactile and squishable and designed to hold and hug.  Each doll will have a chest plate allowing the head to turn and to also make it easier for the doll to be redressed. Each doll will also have a heartbeat, flowering bloomers and a blooming belly button.  John asked about whether there were going to be certificates of authenticity and we were told that the COAs will be presented like baby announcements and that the dolls are going to be consecutively numbered

There will eventually be costumes and accessories for this line such as a diaper bag, bib and rattle. The clothes for each doll will be interchangeable.  In other words if you buy Daisy & Santa Bloomers but want your Daisy doll to have on the holiday outfit, you will be able to make the clothing changes easily.  Babies A Bloom are Collectible Dolls You'll Love To Play With and Play Dolls You'll Love To Collect.  Faces will be retired and new dolls will come out throughout the next year. Again, these are super dolls to give as holiday season gifts to first time doll collectors.  Many of our customers are choosing to get one for their own collection as well as one for a daughter, granddaughter, niece or family friend.

At the event we also got to see a sneak peek of potential future Babies A Bloom dolls including a holiday baby with dark hair, a scarecrow / country themed doll and a blonde doll in a bee outfit. We expect that this line will receive further introduction and publicity at Toy Fair in New York next February.

In the meantime, there will soon be promotional postcards and a direct mail trifold available with a special $10 off coupon toward your Babies A Bloom retail purchase. (We have these coupons / brochures on order and will be happy to apply your $10 off coupon automatically upon request when you pre-order your Daisy and/or Santa Bloomers dolls). QVC will have their own Babies A Bloom doll named Blossom and she will have red hair and green eyes.  She will not be available to retailers but her clothing will be interchangeable with Daisy and Santa Bloomers.  You should hopefully see an ad and editorial about this doll and other Marie Osmond dolls in upcoming Doll Reader magazines.

The next doll that was talked about was Hershey's Kisses. Although this doll was missing from the event, she was anticipated to be a huge hit.  This doll is actually supposed to debut at a special event at Hersheyworld in Hershey's Pennsylvania in October.  We believe there is also supposed to be an event in New York Times Square featuring this doll. Hershey's has over 38,000 collectors so this is an opportunity to also introduce them to this delicious doll and the Marie Osmond Dolls Brand.  Of special note is that the doll is a limited edition of 5,000 pieces and will be in the Hershey's catalog, at QVC and retail so pre-orders are also HIGHLY recommended due to the extra promotion and demand expected outside the traditional Marie Osmond Dolls market. Chocolate friends, we expect her to be gobbled up quickly!   There may also be an article about these events in an upcoming Doll Reader magazine.

Speaking of articles, also watch Dolls Magazine for an upcoming feature on the generosity of Marie Osmond Collectors and a human interest story on how they helped Lisa Hatch and her sister, Missy (M'Lissa Virginia) through a challenging life time.

There will also be a special Marie Osmond Dolls gift with purchase coming out for collectors later this year with the October dolls.   Two years ago, Marie Osmond gave away a special Christmas Ornament and last year the gift was a Holiday Pin and Bag.  This year, Marie's gift to collectors will be a special CD-ROM filled with a special wish from Marie and excerpts and warm anecdotes from her Marie and Friends radio program.  We heard in the meeting that it might possibly be a DVD with pictures but when we received the Demo version earlier this month, it was an audio CD-ROM only so we believe at this point, that it will be audio only.  We don't want to give away the surprises on the CD and ruin the gift so we'll keep the rest a secret for now.  It's sure to be a unique gift that our internet doll collecting friends will appreciate!

As the meeting was only supposed to be an hour, there wasn't time left to go over much else.  We did hear again that Charisma Brands plans to have a new Marie Osmond Dolls website in the near future with an interactive online club and its own bulletin board.   Collectors are invited to participate and share their opinions and suggestions.   There is no word on when this will be active but we'll be sure to post on our Osmond News page when it is up and running!

At this point the main meeting adjourned and we ran back up to our room to pack as we had to catch a 12:30 shuttle to the airport.   Before we left, we had a 12 o'clock retailer meeting with Tracy Stobaugh and placed orders for many of the October dolls.  It was great to have a chance to meet with Tracy as we have interaction with her on a weekly, if not sometimes daily basis.

Thanks to the pre-orders and feedback from many of our doll collecting customers, we are pleased to let you know that the October dolls and a few of the August dolls should be some of the most popular releases in the past couple of years!  We know when you're doing your dolly shopping that you have many quality retailers to choose from.  For those who have bought from us before, we thank you for your business and support.  For those looking in who already have a retailer, we hope you'll consider us as a back-up should your regular retailer ever be sold out of a doll that you'd like.  For those visiting who do not yet have a regular Marie Osmond dolls retailer, we hope you will give us a try and join and our free Count Your Beans Bonus Beans Customer Loyalty & Rewards program. A portion of all Count Your Beans profits go directly to charities which support children so when you shop at Count Your Beans, you're not just treating yourself, you're helping others as well.

Thank you for reading about our adventures.   The only thing left to do here is add are more pictures from the event which I hope to get up by Monday the 16th!  Many of you asked about our top picks from the line and some of our favorites included: Starry Starry Night (Retail Exclusive) - Daisy - Baby Adora Belle Holiday 2004 (Retail Exclusive) - White Christmas Rose - Christmas Cookie - Child's Play Rose Tiny Tot - M'Lissa Virginia Trio Tiny Tots - Baby Annette Holiday - Hershey's Kisses - Farmer's Daughter - Horror-Belle & Terri-Beau Bitty Belles - Candi Corn and Adora Belle Halloween Kitty Cat. This list is by no means all-inclusive but John and I tend to prefer for our own collection the happy smiling dolls and the dolls that are dressed in rich, vibrant color. Other collectors prefer different styles of dolls and the wonderful thing about Marie's line is that there is something for every kind of collector. If we were all the same, life just would not be as interesting!

If you liked what you've read and want to keep abreast of more Marie Osmond doll news, we invite you to visit our Marie Osmond Dolls Resource Center and Marie Osmond Dolls News Page.   As collectors often have similar questions and interests, we developed these pages as resources to share the latest news about dolls and doll releases from Charisma Brands. We also will soon be creating an online mailing list through our website in which we will send regular newsletters to website subscribers.  If you'd like to receive an invitation to join the mailing list once it is launched, please email John at countyourbeans@aol.com.

Well, if you made it this far, you've reached the end of our journey.  We had a smooth and safe flight back to San Jose and enjoyed a fun family evening catching up with Justin and sharing with each other our weekend festivities.  We decided to take the night off from work but knew we had plenty of doll order packing for the next day, so we knew that dolly duty would again soon be calling.  Thank you again for investing your time in this webpage.  We look forward to hearing from you soon!  HAPPY COLLECTING!

Hugs from Your Doll Friends,

Karen & John at Count Your Beans

We here at Count Your Beans are constantly looking to improve the way we do business and to provide the kind of website content that you find interesting and useful.  As it is just the two of us, sometimes website updates can take awhile to do as our first priorities are emails, phone calls and filling and shipping website and auction orders. That being said, we are looking to expand our business and tailor our future website content better to your needs.  As mentioned above, we will soon be creating an online mailing list through our website and we are hoping to launch other special promotions in the near future.

To thank you for reading about our adventures, we would like to give you 15 Bonus Beans absolutely free!  All we ask is that you take a few moments and send us your comments on this page and perhaps give a suggestion or two as to what you might like to see in the future. Also, if you'd like, please let us know what your favorite new releases are for August - November 2004. (You can see pictures and descriptions by browsing our Alphabetical pages.)  Your email need not be lengthy unless you want it to be (goodness knows, I can write a "book" for all of us) but we are interested in your opinions about this webpage and our website!  We also are curious how many of you made it through the entire page!

As I did the writing, John thought it only fair that he receive your comments.  (That way he can soften the blow if there is too much heckling, LOL.)  Please send your comments along with your full name and email address to countyourbeans@aol.com with the Subject Header: 15 BB - Charisma Trip.   We will then get back to you with your Bonus Beans code via email within approximately 48 hours.  Also, if you'd like an invitation to opt-in to our email news mailing list once it launches, feel free to let us know at the same time and we'll be happy to drop you a line when that program is ready!

If you're not familiar with our Bonus Beans program, here is a link to our Bonus Beans FAQ page!  Most customers prefer using Bonus Beans for a Store Credit, however we will soon be adding MANY nice new items to the Bonus Beans Store as well.  I realize that the "Bonus Beans Store" section is quite a bit outdated so I appreciate your patience as I make some new updates over the next couple months.  Until then, we highly recommend our Store Credit / Gift Certificate page so that you can pick a reward of your choosing!

We invite you to tell your Marie Osmond doll friends about this Free 15 Bonus Beans opportunity. If you tell a friend and your friend uses your name and/or email address in their email, you AND your friend will earn an additional 5 Bonus Beans. We will be having additional "Free Bonus Beans" offers in the future where you can earn beans without purchase.  Of course, the best way to earn Bonus Beans is through the purchases you make at the Count Your Beans website.  As always, we sincerely appreciate your friendship and support.
